Deadpool & Wolverine Director Reveals How They Addressed Drug Usage In The Script
Deadpool and the Wolverine director claimed that during the initial team meeting, they ruled out the mention of drug usage from the upcoming MCU movie.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are set to star in an unprecedented Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film featuring Deadpool & Wolverine. This upcoming action-packed movie, aiming for an R-rating, promises intense action, plenty of F-bombs, gory scenes, and other audacious elements. In an interview with Total Film, director Levy discussed the creative journey of Deadpool 3, highlighting initial discussions where the team decided against incorporating drug use into Phase Five of the MCU. Despite this constraint, the writing team toyed with the idea of mentioning drugs in dialogue, a concept that even made it into one of the film’s trailers.

Levy explained, “I’m so wary of what I can say but certainly there were early conversations about overt drug use. We thought that was an interesting conversation. Let’s actually write a dialogue scene about having had it.”

Interestingly, that particular line ended up in one of the trailers, where Deadpool talks to Blind Al, played by Leslie Uggams, about offering her some “Bolivian marching powder.” In the scene, Wade Wilson mentions cocaine, which is “the one thing (Marvel Studios head) Kevin (Feige) says is off the table.”

Previously, Deadpool and Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explained that Disney supported their vision wholeheartedly. Speaking with Den of Geek, Reese said, “They’ve been very supportive. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Other than Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the confirmed cast members for Deadpool 3 include Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Matthew Macfadyen, Shioli Kutsuna, Karan Soni, Tara Strong, TJ Miller, Stefan Kapicic, Lewis Tan and Rob Delaney. The movie is scheduled to release on July 26.
