The song Sara Zamana from the 1981 film Yaarana, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is a memorable classic known for its vibrant energy and catchy tune, sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar. In the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, Amitabh spoke to a contestant Swapn Chaturvedi from Madhya Pradesh and shared some lesser-known stories about one of his most famous performances. He looked back on his iconic song “Sara Zamana” from the film Yaarana.
One of the standout features of this performance was Amitabh’s costume — a striking outfit adorned with light bulbs. Interestingly, this bold choice was his idea. He had requested the designer to incorporate bulbs into the costume, wanting it to “spark” visually. However, Amitabh later said he regretted this decision, revealing that the setup involved live wires connected to plugs. As a result, he felt a shocking jolt while dancing. “The moment the electricity flowed, I started dancing — not because I wanted to, but because I was getting electric shocks!” Amitabh Bachchan said.
The song is particularly famous for its visually striking performance, set in the Netaji Subhash Stadium in Kolkata, which Amitabh suggested as the shooting location. Despite the iconic stadium’s capacity of 12,000, an astonishing crowd of over 50,000 fans showed up for the shoot. Later, Amitabh Bachchan came up with a sneaky plan to shoot at night without raising any eyebrows. After a brief stay in Mumbai, they quietly headed back to Kolkata for the shoot, hoping to avoid the crowds. The director had a clever idea: placing candles in the seats to create the illusion of an audience. And just like that, they pulled off the night shoot and filmed the song successfully!
Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 16 premiered on Sony TV on August 12. Hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the quiz-based reality show airs on Monday to Friday at 9 PM. Besides, it is also available for streaming on Sony LIV.
