Actress Amrita Rao has acted in numerous films over the years, but the Sooraj Barjatya directorial Vivah is one of the most loved and biggest hits of her career. Amrita opened up about her experience working on the film, her relationship with her co-star Shahid Kapoor and her response to the 2006 film.
Speaking to an interviewer on the YouTube channel of production banner Rajshri Productions, Amrita recalled the impact of Vivah. “When Vivah came out, I got these marriage proposals and since we didn’t have that many smartphones back then, I mostly got letters from men from Canada and the US. They always sent me photos of their house, their mothers and their cars. Back then, I used to laugh at these things. But when I look back on it now, I think of the impact a role has: they just want to marry you. It was so magical,” Amrita gushed.
In an earlier interview, Amrita had also shared that when her current partner RJ Anmol saw Vivah with his mother, she wanted him to get her a daughter-in-law like Poonam (Amrita’s character).
In the same chat, Amrita also spoke about the initial mixed reviews of the film, with a section of critics calling her role “regressive”. However, filmmaker Barjatya said not to let the reviews affect her as it is ultimately the audience that decides the fate of a film. As it turned out, the success of Vivah revived the careers of lead actors Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapoor as the film grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box office.
Vivah was Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao’s fourth collaboration as lead actors and their first working experience with director Sooraj Barjatya.
Amrita Rao made her acting debut with Ab Ke Baras (2002), which earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Rao won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female for her portrayal of a college student in the romantic drama Ishq Vishk (2003), her first commercial success. She won the Stardust Award for Best Actress for her performances in the commercially successful films Main Hoon Na (2004), the romance Vivah (2006), the thriller comedy Masti (2004) and the comedy Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008).
