5 Anthologies That Follow the Themes of Suspense and Violence
Anthologies give us the range we want in our favourite films, so here is a list of best compilation of stories in Bollywood.

The trailer of Dharmatic Production’s next Ajeeb Dastaans recently dropped and it promises a lot of action, thrill and suspense. Directed by four prolific directors, this anthology will tell four stories dealing with the themes of human flaws, emotions, love, hatred, jealousy and toxicity in relationships.

While you are waiting for its digital release on April 16, we bring to you a list of anthologies based on similar themes.

Shorts (2013)

This is a compilation of five short films directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Vasan Bala, Anubhuti Kashyap, Shlok Sharma and Gitanjali Rao. This anthology deals with themes like confinement, freedom, violence, confrontation, separation in relationships and survival. What makes this drama more of a treat to watch is its cast which consists of Huma Qureshi, Shweta Tripathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kanchan Mullick, Richa Chaddha, Arjun Shrivastav, and Vineet Kumar Singh among others.

III Smoking Barrels (2018)

Directed by Sanjib Dey, this anthology comprises three stories that deal with socio-political issues of Northeast India. The stories take a deep look at issues faced by children involved in arms conflicts, drug abuse issues and how it affects one’s family. The cast includes Subrat Dutta, Indraneil Sengupta, Shiny Gogoi, Amrita Chattopadhyay, Nalneesh Neel and Rajni Basumatary among others. A unique fact about this film is that it uses six spoken languages.

LSD: Love, Sex Aur Dhokha (2010)

This film was entirely shot in the digital format using different cameras like a Handycam, night-vision camera, security camera and a spy camera. Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, the stories deal with sting operations, honour killing and an MMS scandal. The first story follows a couple marrying against their families which resulted in them getting ambushed and dismembered by the girl’s brother. The second story is about a man who intends to make a sex tape with one of his employees to sell it to media for a large sum of money, and the third story deals with an investigative reporter who is desperate for a sensational story.

Dus Kahaniyaan (2007)

As the name suggests, the anthology is comprised of ten stories directed by six directors- Sanjay Gupta, Apoorva Lakhia, Meghna Gulzar, Rohit Roy, Hansal Mehta and Jasmeet Dhodhi. The stories have extramarital love affairs, kidnapping, suicide, religious riots and more. This anthology is packed with several themes and explores a diverse range of human emotions. The ensemble cast of this film includes Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, Arbaaz Khan, Jimmy Sheirgill, Shabana Azmi, Dino Morea, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Nana Patekar, and many others.

Darna Mana Hai (2003)

Any list of Bollywood anthology films will be incomplete without Darna Mana Hai. Although the supernatural elements in the film make it a bit different from the rest on the list, one cannot ignore the themes of love, revenge, jealousy, and suspense, eeriness every story of this anthology offers. The plot of six friends getting stuck in a forest invokes a sense of uneasiness even without the presence of a supernatural entity. Directed by Prawaal Raman, this one stars Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Shilpa Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Isha Koppikar, Nana Patekar and Sohail Khan.
