Bengal’s Niladri Roy Choudhury had no idea that his life would change, finding himself in a bunker in southern Israel’s Haifa after Hamas’s infiltration into Israeli territory.

Niladri, a young researcher who went to Israel in March last year for cancer research, is in a state of shock.

Speaking to News18, Tapas Roy Choudhury stated, “He resides in the Haifa area of northern Israel. The situation is normal there. His institute is open. Normal activities are going on. Depending on the situation, he goes to a bunker to take shelter for some time. People are very helpful. The Israeli government takes care of the students. We urge the government to bring them [Indians stranded in Israel] back. His scheduled return was in November.”

Niladri hails from Kolaghat in Medinipur city of West Bengal, and his father is a teacher. Niladri’s mother, Joyita Roy Choudhury, said, “His father is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs. We pray to God for his swift return. Our request to the government is to bring back our son. He can’t speak; he only communicates through messages.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday announced the launch of Operation Ajay to assist the return of Indian citizens from Israel. Special charter flights and other arrangements are being organized to ensure the safety and well-being of our nationals abroad.

Niladri’s parents are enduring sleepless nights, expressing their hope that the government will evacuate him along with others. While he is in the relatively safer North Israel, the prevailing tension in the country does make friends and family of those stuck in the conflict-hit country worry.
