Aamir Khan’s show Satyame v Jayat e has managed to bring known-yet-not discussed topics like female foeticide and child sex abuse to our living rooms. Whether it his star status, his well-researched presentation or the sensitivity with which he handled the issues, the show has surely managed to create ripples across the city and the country.City Express spoke to a few Hyderabadis who watched the show and asked as to what they think about it.Abuzar Abdul Wahab, a doctor, opines, “I think the show is pretty good. Even though it’s not some oneof- a-kind show, the fact that a star like Aamir Khan is doing something like this, makes a lot of difference. He is discussing serious and sensitive issues and making all of us discuss them as well. Aamir is making his making people listen.”He doesn’t mind the doctor-bashing that followed Aamir’s first episode.Echoing his views, Abhishek Ponia, an employee, points out, “All of us are aware of the topics that are being featured on this show, but they have never been openly spoken about. Aamir has dared to do this. And, the best aspect is that it provides a solution to the problem after dissecting the issue piece-by-piece. Some people may call it a sham, but I call it an eye-opening, inspirational show."While Abhishek finds the show inspirational, Minakshi Jain, a student, gets emotional every time she watches the show. “I get so emotional watching Satyamev Jayate and sometimes need to hold my tears back. The contents of the show make me cringe and at the same time stir my conscience to do something,” she shares.While most people are all praises for Aamir’s initiative, Devender Kumar, a student from the Hyderabad Central University, who hails from Bikaner, offers a different take. He opines, “Aamir Khan hosting a show and discussing serious issues and questioning the system will not make a difference. I believe our education system needs to be changed and that should create awareness amongst people about how important gender equality is. Added to that, the government should should take action against criminals who are involved in female foeticide. Being from a state where the most cases of female foeticide occur, I observe that gender discrimination is more in villages while female foeticide is more in cities where more people are aware of the facility available.”Agreeing with Devender is Srabani Basu, a Ph.D student.She says, “Everybody knows about female foeticide and many are trying to fight against it. Just by Aamir Khan shedding some tears on a television show, is it going to create awareness in the society? I heard that he is charging around Rs One Crore per episode, making this a completely commercial endeavour.”Hate it or love it, you just cannot ignore it. And after two episodes, all must be waiting in anticipation, wondering what the topic would be this Sunday. Well, let’s give you a hint. It has something to do with the Big Fat Indian weddings.
