Yamuna likely to flood Delhi on Saturday
All civic agencies have been warned to take precautionary measures.

New Delhi: The Yamuna river has risen due to the heavy rains over the past few days and is likely to cross the danger mark and flood low-lying areas along the bank in the Capital on Saturday, an official said.

"By 0800 hrs IST today (Saturday), the water level in Yamuna had reached 204.55 metres. At 204 metres we had sounded a flood alert. The water level is likely to reach 205.05 metres - above the danger mark, by 1000 hrs IST today (Saturday)," a government official told IANS.

"A warning has been issued to all the civic agencies to take precautionary measures and to evacuate people in the low-lying areas adjacent to the river," the official added.

A flood alert was sounded in the capital on Friday as continuous rainfall led to rising water levels in the Yamuna.

Haryana too released over 400,000 cusecs of water into the river upstream.

Last year, the water level had reached 206 metres and people from slum clusters along the riverbank had to be evacuated.

The official said the Government was prepared to tackle any situation this time around.

"We have boats for rescue operations. Relief teams have been asked to inform people living near the Yamuna. Delhi has thousands of people living in low-lying areas near the Yamuna," the official added.

"Relief camps are also being set up in various areas. All the necessary arrangements have been taken care of," he said.
