Washington: US President George Bush is famous for his verbal gaffes, only this time, one such gaffe inundated a small school with numerous telephone calls.
During a national televised address last week on the issue of rising mortgage payments, President Bush urged people to call a helpline number for getting advice on how to ease the problem of rising bills, but gave the wrong number.
Instead of uttering the helpline number as 1-888-995-HOPE, Bush urged the people to dial 1-800-995-HOPE, not once, but twice. The latter telephone number belongs to Freedom Christian Academy in Texas, which started receiving calls from families, seconds after Bush completed his speech.
"I've tried my best to give the correct number to these people when they called, but today it got a little overwhelming because I couldn't do anything except answer these calls," The Telegraph quoted academy's Karen Pulaski, as saying to the Dallas Morning News.
The academy has unplugged the phone to avoid receiving the calls.
