New Delhi: After the controversy over acquisition of land in Nandigram, work on the Tata Motors' small car project in Singur began in full swing on Saturday, with 1,000 workers starting preparations for setting up the main plant.
Work began on the foundations of the assembly, welding and engineering sections of the main plant at the site about 35 km from Kolkata.
Work was progressed smoothly under the watchful eyes of a large number of security personnel posted at the site.
On Friday, activists of Trinamool Congress-backed Krishi Jami Raksha Committee had attacked the fencing around the site at some places and torched a temporary watchtower before being chased away by police.
Besides work on the main plant, the construction of roads and a boundary wall has been taken up simultaneously, the official said.
Tata Motors signed a formal agreement with the West Bengal government a week ago for taking complete control of 997 acres on which the Rs 1,700-crore plant will be set up to manufacture the dream Rs one lakh people's car, expected to hit the roads in the second half of 2008.
The convener of the Krishi Jami Raksha Committee, Becharam Manna, said the protests against the acquisition of land for the project will continue.
