New Delhi: In a shocking case of torture for dowry, a 23-year-old woman was allegedly beaten up by her husband in Hindon area of Rajasthan and then tied up in a barn leading to her wounds getting infested with maggots.

Kamlesh, who is back in her parents' home in Delhi and whose case has been taken up by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), spent five days without food or water in a barn where goats were kept before she was rescued by her neighbours.

Following DCW's intervention, an FIR was lodged in Kalyanpuri Police Station in East Delhi and a team of Delhi Police have arrested the victim's husband, Govind Ram, and two of her in-laws and were bringing them to Delhi, a commission spokesperson said.

DCW has also approached NHRC with the case and the human rights panel has assured all possible help in the matter.

"Kamlesh got married five years back and from the very start she was tortured for dowry. Last week, she was hit on the head by her husband, and in a bleeding state she was tied up in the barn where she lay without food, water or medical assistance for five days," she said.

Kamlesh's neighbours informed her family in Delhi after which her brother Roop Chand rushed to Rajasthan and brought her to Delhi.

"But even here Kamlesh has not had it easy, with Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where she was first taken, sending her back after first-aid and police not registering her case promptly," the DCW spokesperson said, adding that the police registered the FIR only after the commission's intervention.

She added that the DCW would get Kamlesh, a mother of a two-and-a-half year old son, admitted to AIIMS on Saturday.
