Amritsar: A young addict is kept chained up at her home here so that she doesn't get hold of drugs, her mother said as she complained about the state of government-run de ddiction centres.
She claimed that her 24-year-old daughter is kept shackled at home almost the entire time.
A video clip on social media showed the woman, chained to the bed by her ankle, talking to Amritsar MP Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla who visited their home on Tuesday.
The episode appears to have jolted the local administration which has now assured that she will get de-addiction treatment at home.
The woman was earlier admitted at a government de-addiction centre, but was pulled out of there.
The victim and her mother, who is widowed, alleged that peddlers had access to the addicts at the centre and kept them supplied with drugs. Also, they complain that there are no all-female de addiction centre in the area.
I resorted to the extreme measure after failing to get proper medical treatment for my daughter to stop her from taking drugs, the mother told media persons.
She said the treatment provided at the city's de-addiction centre was pitiable. Moreover, there was easy availability of drugs in and around the de-addiction centre, she said.
City sub-divisional Magistrate Shivraj Singh Bal, Swami Vivekanand de-addiction centre in-charge Dr P D Garg and other officials visited the woman at her home but she refused to get herself admitted at the government-run facility.
A press release from the district administration said the woman's family had taken her back home as she came in contact at the centre with peddlers who continued to supply her with drugs. The administration has now set up a team of doctors who will regularly visit the woman at her home to provide her the medical treatment, officials said.
Congress MP Aujla assured her all possible help from the Punjab Government. Blaming the police, the ruling party MP said it is pathetic that they have proved helpless in fighting the drug menace even though the state government gave them a free hand to tackle the alarming situation.
The victim's 50-year-old mother said she got addicted to drugs while working at a beauty parlour in Chandigarh. Whatever she earned there, she spent it on buying drugs. She came back from Chandigarh two years ago. Since then I have been taking her to the Swami Vivekanand government de-addiction centre, she said.
