New Delhi: Union Agriculture Ministry is investigating the matter of over 20,000 lakh kg of wheat rotting due to flash floods in Sirsa, Haryana even as nine Food Corporation of India officers from Uttar Pradesh have been suspended after 300 tonnes of wheat rotted as they were kept in the open.
FCI General Manager (Northern Region) has also started an inquiry into the matter.
The Punjab government on Wednesday called for the FCI to speed up the movement of old foodgrain stock from the state to create additional capacity for storage.
"We have demanded from the FCI to expedite the movement of old stocks of foodgrain so that there is no damage to the crop lying in godowns and open areas," Punjab Food and Supplies Director DS Grewal said.
FCI Chairman Siraj Hussain on Wednesday held a meeting with senior officials of the Food and Supplies Department of Punjab and Haryana to review the movement of foodgrains and storage capacity creation in both the states.
"We have told the chairman that there should not be any violation of the First in-First Out (FIFO) norm of movement of foodgrain stock from the state so that crops which are vulnerable to damage are moved out of the state on a priority basis," he said.
Punjab also sought to speed up the movement of stocks through trains so that the state has minimum stocks from the previous year before the harvesting of the next crop. Punjab currently has 110 lakh MT of wheat and 63 lakh of rice in storage facilities.
