Water level not a threat, submits AG

KOCHI: Advocate-General K P Dandapani submitted before the Kerala High Court on Friday that the safety of Mullaperiyar dam and its water level are not related. He said it was the age of the dam and frequent quakes in the region which are threatening its structure.The AG said that even if the Mullaperiyar dam meets with a disaster, the water can be contained by Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu dams. The Idukki dam can contain 74 TMC water whereas Mullaperiyar dam can contain only 11 TMC.Appearing for the state, Dandapani made the submission at a hearing of nine petitions requesting the court’s intervention in the Mullaperiyar issue.When the AG submitted that the people were panicky because of the media, the court pointed out, “It is their duty to alert the public.”
