Pune: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has sought time till December 30 to authenticate his claims of being a farmer from Uttar Pradesh.

In 2000, the Bollywood star had purchased 20 acres of land in the beautiful hillstation of Lonavla, Maharashtra, and got it registered in his name on the basis of documents, that allegedly proclaimed him to be a farmer from Jaunpur.

Under the Tenancy and Agricultural Land Act, 1963, only farmers can buy agricultural land in the state.

Earlier this month district authorities had issued a notice to Bachchan asking him to submit original documents proving his status.

These documents are neccesary for Bachchan to acquire 20 acres of agricultural land near Lonavala, Maharashtra.

"Bachchan has requested us to give him time till December 30, to furnish original documents as they were still not ready and his request has been acceded to," a senior official at the Maval Sub division office said on Saturday.

"The registration of the land purchased in 2000 has been done on the basis of xerox copies. Once the the original documents are verified, including Bachchan's claim of being a farmer, we will settle the matter," the official added.
