THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Defence clearance has been accorded to two firms that bid for the multi-crore Vizhinjam International Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) Project, Ports Minister K Babu said. The financial bids submitted by the two companies will be opened once the Union Home Ministry also gives its green signal, he said. Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd and a Consortium consisting of Welspun Infratech Ltd, Welspun Corp Ltd, and Leighton Welspun Contarctors Pvt Ltd had submitted bids for the project whose Phase I is expected to cost over Rs 4,000 crore. While the technical bids have been approved, the State Government had said that the financial bids would be opened only after Defence clearance had been accorded.The Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), the State Government firm overseeing the project, expects to complete the first phase of the three-phase project by 2015. In this phase, the major works include a three-km breakwater and a 650-metre quay.
