THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is prepared to establish a shipyard at Vizhinjam provided the local people had no objection. The Centre had stated that Kerala had the potential for a second shipyard, Ports Minister K Babu said on Friday.He was speaking after dedicating a 500 tonne bollard pull test facility installed by the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) at Vizhinjam. The Minister said that a Customs House can be set up at the coastal fishing hub by January next year. The minister also inaugurated a water supply and sanitation scheme for Vizhinjam on the occasion.The highest capacity bollard pull test facility in India, the Vizhinjam facility also ranks among the ‘strongest’ in the world, according to CSL. At present, the maximum capacity available in India is 200 T.A bollard pull test determines the static pull that a tug or ship can exert with its own propulsion system. The test is performed by tying a hawser from the ship to a fixed bollard on the shore and measures the pull of the ship in tons under maximum operating condition by means of a load cell (dynamometer).CSL established this facility here foreseeing the construction of high bollard pull offshore vessels by CSL to meet the market demands for deep sea drilling operations in future, CSL officials said. Jameela Prakasam MLA presided over the function. Mayor K Chandrika was the chief guest. Union Shipping secretary K Mohandas delivered the keynote address. district panchayat president Remani P Nair, Ports director Jacob Thomas, CSL director K Subramanian were also present.
