The government appointed Vijay Shankar as the CBI director following the retirement of U S Mishra on December 6.

New Delhi: The suspense over the appointment of director of the Central Bureau of Investigation is over.

The government on Friday night appointed Vijay Shankar as the Central Bureau of Investigation director following the retirement of U S Mishra on December 6.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday cleared Shankar?s name.

Shankar was earlier in the CBI as additional director, when he handled the extradition proceedings of underworld don Abu Salem and Bollywood actress Monica Bedi.

He has also handled cases like Bilkis Banu case and Telgi scam.

He was transferred from the CBI in May 2004 immediately after the Congress-led UPA came to power.

Shankar, an Indian Police Service officer of the 1969 batch from UP cadre, was posted as director general, National Disaster, Civil Defence and Home Guards before being appointed to the post.

He also served in the Uttar Pradesh police and had a stint of seven years with the Border Security Force, when he was posted as inspector general of Kashmir Range 1991 to 1993.

He has also served in Moscow under the Ministry of External Affairs.

Shankar was a recipient of the President's police medal for distinguished and meritorious services.
