Vigilantes strike again in Mangalore

Over 50 members of a right wing vigilante group beat revellers including women at a resort in Padeel on Saturday.

The vigilantes, owing allegiance to Hindu Jagarana Vedike, barged into the resort Morning Mist in Padeel, close to Kankanady railway station at around 7.30 pm. Sources said over 14 students including five girls from prestigious colleges in and around Mangalore were dragged out of the resort, located in a secluded spot, and beaten up.

In an attack reminiscent of the infamous raid on Amnesia Pub, vigilantes beat up girls attempting to flee from the place. Police sources said the students had booked the resort for a two-day party on Saturday and Sunday.

The vigilantes also robbed the students of their cell phones and other valuables.

Mangalore Rural police, on being tipped off about the attack, rushed to the spot and took five members of the group into custody.

BJP corporator Mohan, who was initially detained on suspicion of instigating the raid on the resort, was later released. Police shifted the students from the resort to the police station.

Vijay, a member who identified himself as  a disc jockey (DJ), was also questioned about the motive behind organising the party in a secluded resort.

Mangalore Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh who visited the resort was seen taking the vigilantes to task for taking law into their hands.
