THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As Valentine’s Day calls again, some would be expecting to share the day with their lover while others may have sweet memories of it. Some others, bearing broken hearts, would have bitter experiences to rue about. As the city’s youngsters share a piece of their mind, City Express is all ears. Sithin P, a final year student of Bachelor of Mass Communication and Video Production in Mar Ivanios college finds that there isn’t much oomph for the V-day on the campus. “Celebrations are held outside. Many would choose the nearest cafeteria or eatery where they can sit and enjoy,” he observes. According to him, the highlight of the day are the gifts. Teddy bears and wrist watches are the preferred items. Some would order for the gift very early so that the valentine would receive it on V-day by post. He warns that the splurging is best kept under wraps and not noticed by parents. Yet others find the day a mere hype for businesses to reap to reap a windfall Bhuvana, a college student in the city says, “I have been in a relationship for four years. Neither me nor my boyfriend finds this day any special. It is the businessmen in the city who make a great deal of it, to attract customers.” Indu B, a marketing professional with a city firm too is of the same opinion. V-day celebrations these days are very commercialised. It has therefore lost all the charm about it,” she observes. Suvin S V who has just finished his bachelor’s in engineering from College of Engineering, Karunagapally, recollects with joy, a prank he and his friends played during their college days. “We pasted posters bearing messages for and against Valentine’s day on two corners of the college. One was meant for couples and the other for those who are against the whole idea,” he reminisces. Krishna Priya who is doing her final year post graduate journalism programme at Kerala University says, “during school days, we used to make fun of friends who celebrated V-day. As it is a day observed to pay homage to St.Valentine, it should have been given much more nobility I believe.”
