New Delhi: Several rivers in Uttarakhand are once again in spate following heavy rains in the state for the last three days. Several villages have once again been cut off and many people have been trapped. Relief work has come to a standstill and rehabilitation work has stopped.
The water level has been increasing rapidly in Bhagirathi, Alakhnanda, Ashiganga and many other rivers. People have been evacuated from the affected place and moved to safe places.
Even helicopters used for relief and rescue work have not been flying due to the bad weather. Cremation of bodies in Kedarnarth has also stopped due to heavy rains and many government officials have been stuck in the area.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has called a high-level meeting to discuss measures to deal with the situation but no plan could be finalised. "I have spoken to the officials. We will ask for Rs 500 crore from the Prime Minister for relief and rescue work," said Bahuguna.
In Dehradun three people including two women and one child have died after a house collapsed while in Chamoli's Urgam valley eight houses have collapsed.
Power supply has been restored in most villages but it may be short lived as the Met department has warned of heavy rains over the next few days. The government has announced a two-day leave for all private and government schools.
