New Delhi: Five orphans, who were deserted after their parents died after contracting AIDS in Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, have been provided a 250 square metre piece of undisputed land to live on. This came after the land they were earlier given by the state administration turned out to be disputed.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also promised them a house and Rs 5 lakh as financial assistance. The children were until now living near the graveyard of their parents after their relatives deserted them for the fear of contracting AIDS.
The Pratapgarh District Magistrate will also meet them on Monday. The five children, the youngest of whom is just seven years old, were abandoned by relatives who feared that they would contract AIDS from them.
"After our parents died, our relatives abandoned us thinking they will contract AIDS from us. Now we have set up a camp in the graveyard and are living here," said a child.
