University promotes research education
Anna University ties up with two Canadian Universities for promoting research education in several disciplines.

Chennai: The Anna University, will tie-up with two Canadian Universities for promoting research education in several disciplines, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, D Viswanathan, said on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters at the inauguration of the Canadian Education-Technology Transfer Mission, Dr Viswanathan said that AU would be signing MoUs with the University of York and University of Toronto, in the fields of nano-technology, bio-technology, advanced material sciences and engineering in a few months time.

"The AU has nearly 2500 PhD scholars and such association with Universities abroad will pave way for exchange of research scholars," Viswanathan said. He said that Universities from other countries also found India "lucrative" because of its rich human resource.

Also speaking on the occasion, W G (Gib) Mc Ewen, Trade Consul-Trade Commissioner, Canada, said that a liaison between Indian and Canadian institutions would be brought out for promoting Canadian educational courses in India.

"A Canadian education fair would be held in Chennai soon, in which 20 Canadian Universities and colleges would participate," he added.

Retired IAS officer M G Devasahayam, Chief Consultant of the Research Park to be set up by the Indian Institute of Technology here said that India has been ranked sixth in investment potential by the UN Centre for Trade and Development and has been predicted to move up to the third position by 2009.Thus, the international community could look for 'employable' graduates from India, he said.

Hazel Shiromani, Director, Educational Projects, Canadian Education Centre, said that Indian students in Canada could now have an extended stay of two years after completing their course, as against the one-year visa provided earlier.
