CHENNAI: The city police arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party functionary near the Koyambedu market on April 27. Police said that Vittal (35) of Sai Nagar, Virugambakkam, who was the 127th Ward secretary of the BJP, was found murdered on the night of April 27. Upon investigation by a special team, it was found that Vittal had lent `2 lakh to a vegetable vendor in Koyambedu, Sundarapandian, a year ago and the latter had not returned the money despite Vittal’s threat of legal action. Further, the vendor had incurred a loss in his business and moved to a shop in Velachery run by his brother Murugan.Officials said that a few weeks ago, Vittal had visited Murugan’s shop and asked Sundarapandian to pay up the loan and the interest. This allegedly led to a mild skirmish between the two. Following this incident, Sundarapandian, police officials claimed, conspired with his brother and two of his friends — Gangadharan and Sanmugasundaram — to get rid of Vittal and murdered him on April 27. Police arrested Sundarapandian and Gangadharan from their hideout in J J Nagar on Sunday night. The team is on the lookout for the other two.
