Varanasi: Local TV journalists accompanying a woman allegedly gatecrashed the wedding reception of her ex-husband and engaged in scuffles with his relatives, including a BSP MLA and his bodyguards, as well as with the police.
Trouble broke out when Anupama Singh from Ambedkar Nagar allegedly pulled out her sandals and tried to hit Pawan Singh, whom she divorced three years ago, during the reception in Pandeypur area last night, City Superintendent of Police Rajeev Malhotra said.
He said the 20-odd TV news personnel with her wanted to film the scene and this was objected to by the groom's side, which included his uncle, BSP MLA Sher Bahadur Singh and his gunners.
On getting information of the scuffle, a police team was sent there and separated the two groups.
The journalists alleged that the gunners of the MLA from Jalalpur constituency beat them up "mercilessly" at his behest, Malhotra said.
They were taken to Cantonment police station to register a case "but were not satisfied" and staged an impromptu protest there, blocking traffic near upmarket Pandeypur.
"As they tried to take the law into their own hands a lathi charge was ordered," Malhotra said but the scribes alleged they were "unnecessary beaten up by the police".
Later, the ADM and other senior officials reached the police station and brought the situation under control. Police registered cases by five different parties and the ADM has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the whole episode.
