Srinagar: Coming down heavily on the Army over a recent encounter in Tral in which a youth Khalid Wani was killed, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said that the Army should have been more cautious.
"It is an unfortunate incident. The Army should have dealt cautiously in the situation. It would be looked into like the earlier Budgam incident where Army admitted to its fault. We will find the facts in this case. Such incidents should not take place," Sayeed said.
The man was killed in the crossfire when the Army tried to corner a Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan, who incidentally was Wani's brother. However, his relatives have accused the Army of a fake encounter.
The police claimed that they got to know that the youth had terror links and was meeting a top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist. A police probe is likely to take place over the incident.
The Army issued a statement saying that the encounter took place in Kamla Forest on April 13 when terrorists fired upon the patrolling team and a soldier suffered gun shot wound. As a result firing continued and a search operation was conducted after that.
The Army said that a body along with two AK-47 rifles and warlike stores were recovered from the site. The body was identified to be of the listed over ground worker Khalid Wani, brother of Burhan, Hizbul Mujahideen Commander. One of the rifles recovered was identified to be snatched from J&K Police on August 8, 2014.
The Army added that three youth were also arrested from the area by Police. During questioning, the trio said that Khalid had taken them with him to the place where Burhan and three other terrorists were hiding.
