CHENNAI: As the movement against corruption gains momentum, a social activist from the city is following in Anna Hazare’s footsteps. ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy of Tamizh Desiya Makkal Katchi went on an indefinite fast on Monday demanding a Lokpal for Tamil Nadu and the implementation of the Lokpal Bill pending for the last 40 years.Ramaswamy, who is holding his protest in Kalakshetra Colony, Beasant Nagar, put forth his charter of five demands including the formation of a Lokpal committee with a High Court judge and two social activists in each State. He said the Prime Minister should be brought under the ambit of the Lokpal. The Lokpal should also have power to file cases against erring ministers without any permissions.Ramaswamy, who has filed a PIL seeking a direction to the Centre to give representation for southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu where corruption is rampant, in the Lokpal Bill drafting committee, said that each State should have a Lokpal with a tenure of five years. He said that the decision of the Lokpal should be binding and the only mode of seeking relief would be the Supreme Court.The Madras High Court has issued notices to the Prime Minister’s Office and the secretary to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice following the PIL filed by him.
