KOTTAYAM: In a major initiative to protect domesticated elephants in the state, Forest Minister KB Ganesh Kumar has said that those who torture elephants will have to face stringent action.He was speaking after inaugurating the state-level launch of handing over of the registration certificates of domesticated elephants here on Friday. He stated that the government would take strict action against those violating the norms while transporting elephants. “The government has already issued the parameters of the truck in which the elephant is to be transported,” he said.He added that the data collection of elephants would give their exact number in the state. “The details collected through the registration certificate campaign will be uploaded on the website of the Forest Department with photos of the elephant and its owner. It will be useful in promoting tourism too,” said Ganesh Kumar.He praised the Kerala Elephant Owners’ Federation for the assistance provided in collecting the details of domestic elephants. However, he said that the Wildlife Department would take strict action against the Travancore Devaswom Board, which did not cooperate with the data collection exercise. He also assured that he would not allow any officials to charge fake cases against anybody. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan presided over the inaugural function.
