The Indian Air Force Senior Warrant Officer Murugan (39), who recently died in a helicopter crash in Sarmat Firing range near Jamnagar, was cremated with full honour in his native town of Thanjavur on Saturday.
Murugan and nine others of IAF were killed in a mid-air collision of two Russian made MI 17 in a training mission. Murugan had joined the Air Force at a tender age to serve the country.
His death created a huge shock among his family members and relatives. Three An-32 aircraft were pressed into service by IAF to deliver bodies of the men killed in the mishap. The body was flown to Tiruchy and brought to Thanjavur by road.
Murugan is survived by his wife Sivagamasundari and two sons Akash (10) and Jayaprakash (11). His body was kept for public memorial service at his residence situated in Nanjikottai Road.
Thanjavur MLA M Rengaswamy, RDO N Kalidas and Congress South district secretary K Varadarajan paid homage to the officer.
Later, the body was taken in a procession to the Marikulam burial ground where the last rites were performed with 11 rounds of gunfire thrice to pay respect to the departed soul. Another squadron leader named V Manoj, the airman attached to the Sulur Air Force Station, who died in a chopper crash at Jamnagar in Gujarat was cremated in the city on Saturday.
