ALUVA: Thousands of devotees performed 'Bali Tharpanam' for their ancestors at the holy Sivarathri Manalpuram on the banks of the Periyar here on Saturday on the occasion of 'Karkitaka Vavu'.The special poojas began at the Mahadeva temple at 3.30 am. Thantri Chennas Divakaran Namboodiripad and Melsanthi Mullappally Manackal Subrahmanian Namboodiri were the main celebrants of the ritual.The devotees started converging on the Manalpuram from Friday evening onwards.The Travancore Devaswam Board (TDB) made elaborate arrangements on the site and allotted more than 100 balitharas on the banks of the river.The vehicular traffic was restricted on the road reaching Manalpuram from Thottakkattukara Junction.TDB member K V Padmanabhan and Deputy Devaswom Commissioner (Vaikom) G Anilkumar supervised the arrangements. The arrangements were controlled by administrative officer S Reghunathan Nair.SP Harshita Attaluri and DySP R Salim monitored the law and order situation.In the wake of security threat, the district police chief had deployed additional police force under CI K B Prafulla Kumar and SI Nishad Ibrahim in and around the Manalpuram.Woman police officers and police in mufti were also deployed.Naval divers were deployed in Aluva since Friday to meet any emergency situation in the river. Ambulance, medical staff and Fire and Rescue Service were alerted. District Administration and other Government Departments coordinated the arrangements.The KSRTC operated bus service from early morning onwards.
