MADURAI: Villagers in Theni district were a jubilant lot on Tuesday, after they received word that the Supreme Court had rejected Kerala’s plea to reduce storage level at the Mullaiperiyar dam to a height of 120 feet.Bursting crackers to celebrate, they also expressed happiness over the court asking the Centre to confirm the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force at the dam site. Following the SC direction on the issue, the administration and police, who informed the public about the ruling, asked them to restrain from protests. Police vehicles announcing the SC ruling through microphones were seen moving in border areas. A senior police official said, Kerala’s attempts to build new dams and reduce the storage level had caused fear among the locals but after the SC verdict, they were a relieved lot. But, a senior official said restrictions under Section 144 would continue.
