KOZHIKODE: IUML supremo Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal has found himself on the horns of a dilemma as the rift between Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, the body of scholars of E K Sunni faction having pro-IUML lenience, is getting widened. Hyderali Thangal, the IUML state president, Samastha vice-president and the SYS (Sunni Yuvajana Sangham) president, seems to have become so ineffective that he miserably failed to allay the concerns of the Samastha leaders over IUML’s drift towards the rival Sunni faction led by Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar.Being an integral link between the party and Samastha, the uncritical supporters of Muslim League for decades, Thangals of Panakkad family have always been the last word for both organisations. “Muslim League former president Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal had a clear edge over the IUML and Samastha leaders. He was always above senior IUML leaders such as P K Kunhalikutty and E Ahamed and had the final word in party affairs.“However, Hyderali Thangal lacks that upperhand, which is his major weak point,” a senior political analyst told Express.Political observers point out that Samastha leaders strongly criticised IUML’s relation with Kanthapuram in the meeting. “Thangal failed to stop Samastha leaders from speaking against the party to the media. Besides, Samastha leader Cherussery Sainudeen Musaliyar bluntly objected the party’s decision to give admission to Nirmal Madhav at the MEA College run by Samastha in the presence of Thangal, who earlier offered a seat for him in the college. All these prove that Thangal lacks the authority to influence decisions of IUML and Samastha,” analysts said.It is reliably learnt that the IUML leadership is also upset over Hyderali Thangal continuing as the president of the SYS. “The party has always wanted Thangal to shed the post and lead the initiative to bring all religious organisations on a common platform. Being the president of a feeder organisation of the Samastha, Hyderali Thangal cannot not take a balanced approach in the issue,” sources maintained.Admitting that Samastha has some apprehensions in IUML’s relationship with Kanthapuram faction and by heading both organisations Hyderali Thangal is in a dilemma, party state general secretary and MP E T Mohammed Basheer said: “Having been our strongest supporters for years, the party will take Samastha leaders into confidence. Being a political party, IUML has been trying to bring all organisations of the community on a common platform and there is no compromise in that stand. “However, party’s attempts to sort out issues between the two Sunni factions were not productive. The party will continue its efforts to solve the issue at the earliest.”Meanwhile, Hyderali Thangal, when contacted said, “The party has no issues with the Samastha and there is no rift between the two,” he said.
