VISAKHAPATNAM: The controversy over bauxite mining has led to some unpleasant arguments at the orientation programme being conducted for the first time elected legislators at Araku valley near here on Tuesday.The programme aimed at knowing the tribal issues firsthand turned out to be heated debate between officials and TDP MLAs as speaker Nadendla Manohar has championed the idea of legislators going to agency area to understand the ground realities being faced by the tribals.Trouble started when TDP MLAs Siveri Soma (Araku) and KSNS Raju (Chodavaram) picked up an argument after AP Mineral Development Corporation managing director, Mukesh Kumar Meena said that the proposed bauxite mining is under process.They contended that tribals were opposing bauxite mining in the agency areas and the official’s statement was misleading. The proposed bauxite mining would hit livelihood of the tribals besides having adverse affect on environment. Ignoring these facts, the corporation is pushing for bauxite mining ignoring the interests of the tribals, they said during the session which was discussing the mining issue and boycotted the session.Earlier, Manohar addressing the first-time legislators said, the visit to tribals areas to study various issues is a great opportunity to all the first time MLAs and MLCs to understand and discuss why the tribals were opposing the proposed bauxite mining in the agency areas. All the legislators should know how government ’s welfare schemes were being implemented in their Assembly segments.WEBSITE FOR MLAS Manohar said for the first time an website (Assembly Website) would be launched on Wednesday for the benefit of the MLAs.They can send their questions through website to Assembly Secretary roundthe- year.
