KOCHI: ‘Lead India...Engineering the Future,’ an innovate contest on the social issues plaguing the society was held as part of ‘Brahma - 12’ at Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kalady, on Friday. The contest aimed at nurturing a culture of social awareness and tried contributing to the uplift of society.Students were asked questions on various issues plaguing society and to give concrete measures to resolve them. Many gave suggestions to the first question on malnutrition in India. The students said that the mid-day meal scheme should be intensified by adding more nutritious packages. They also pointed out that the government should monitor the scheme at regular intervals and ensure that the children get their fair quota of food. The next issue discussed was that of waste disposal for which many suggested solutions. The Mysore model for waste management found many takers. Mysore is the second cleanest city in India and the procedures followed there must be followed across the country, they said. Mullaperiyar Dam which has been creating panic was the other topic of discussion. All the students said that a new dam is the need of the hour. They also said that the suggestion made by Kochouseph Chittilappilly on reinforcing the old dam must also be looked into. They also said the height of the maximum water level must be reduced from 136 feet to 120 feet.Another topic taken up at the ‘Lead India...’ was the issue of allowing FDI in retail in India. Most were against the proposal. Instead of having foreign involvement, they said, that a consortium of all the shop owners in the country must be formed. Overall, ‘Lead India...’ proved to be as enlightening and as interesting as the auto expo which was marked by creativity and aesthetics.
