Mumbai: A movie outing for a family turned ugly when they had a heated argument with a group of school students, who allegedly thrashed them outside the theatre to avenge their ouster from the hall, resulting in eight arrests police said on Friday.
A 30-year-old unemployed man and seven SSC students were arrested on charges of assault and rioting after they trapped and assaulted Sunny Vaiti (23), his brother Amol and father Lewis Vaiti before smashing the window panes of their vehicle near Lotus hotel in Dahisar on Thursday night, police said.
According to police, Vaiti family went to watch 'Agneepath' at Movie Gem Cinema theatre on Thursday. During the screening, as the item song 'Chikni Chameli' began, students started dancing causing inconvenience to Lewis family and others sitting next to them.
One of the students stumbled into Vaiti, who slapped the minor following a heated argument, police said.
The students were then thrown out of the theatre in the middle of the movie for causing inconvenience to the spectators, police said.
Enraged, the students narrated the incident to one Ramesh Vishwakarma, who is a neighbour to the students.
Vishwakarma and the students caught hold of Lewis family near a restaurant and started kicking and thrashing them with bamboos, police said.
After a while, they escaped the spot to evade arrest, police said. "The eight accused, including seven SSC students, were nabbed from their residence in Dahisar for the crime," said Anil Pawar, inspector at Dahisar police station.
