CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu may witness rampant power cuts from June 1 as the Tamil Nadu Power Producers' Association has threatened to shut down their plants in protest against the lackadaisical attitude of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
"We are a group of 20 private power producers in the State who jointly producing about 800 MW of power and sell it to TNEB Grid. But we may be forced to shut our plants from June 1 as TNEB's purchase rate is unreasonable given the cost of the coal we use as raw material," V Krishnan, secretary of the association, told Express.Though input cost for private players has increased manifold, it has not been reflected in the purchase of power by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, he said.

More than 2,500 people who are directly employed and 10,000 who are indirectly employed by the plants may be affected if power is not purchased at a reasonable price by the Staterun TNEB, he added
