BANGALORE: Are you one of those people who think twice before taking a decision to use Dr Rajkumar Road to reach Yashwanthpur from Okalipuram? If so, here is some good news for you. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has commenced construction of an underpass at Okalipuram Junction to ease traffic-related problems.According to BBMP sources, the frequency of vehicles per hour is around 7,000 at Okalipuram Junction. To ensure smooth movement of vehicles, the BBMP plans to construct underpasses at Okalipuram Junction and Vivekananda College Junction. “It will be a relief for people of Okalipuram and surrounding areas who are fed up with traffic jams that have become a daily feature at Okalipuram Junction,” says Chakaravarthy, husband of Queen Elizabeth, Corporator of Okalipuram ward. Residents of Okalipuram expected the BBMP to take this measure a long time ago to minimise traffic jams at Okalipuram Junction. “It is difficult for us either to enter Okalipuram or to go towards Magadi Road through this junction during peak hours. I am happy to know that the BBMP is finally taking an initiative to construct an underpass here,” says M Muruga, a resident of Okalipuram. The BBMP is taking up the construction at the cost of `12 crore. The proposed underpass at Vivekananda College Junction is expected to cost the BBMP more than `7 crore. It is learnt that the railways has agreed to handover 1,332 sq mts of land near Okalipuram Junction for the construction of the underpass. “The construction of the underpass at Okalipuram Junction is expected to be completed within six months,” says B G Raghavendra Prasad, Executive Engineer, Road and Infrastructure, BBMP.According to reliable sources, the development of five traffic junctions — Rajajinagar Entrance, Rajajinagar 3rd Block Junction, Navarang Junction, 10th Cross Junction and Government Soap Factory Junction — is to be included in phase II of the signal free corridor of Dr Rajkumar Road. “There is a proposal to make 12 signal free corridors in Bangalore but we are taking up corridors where acquiring land is not a problem. As of now, we are focusing on Okalipuram and Vivekananda College Junctions to mitigate traffic-related problems,” says S Somasehekara, Chief Engineer, Roads and Infrastructure, BBMP.There are other proposed signal-free corridors. The approximate length of these corridors is 117 km and the proposed number of junctions to be improved is 107.Other proposed signal-free corridors are■ Chord Road from Mysore Junction to C V Raman Road■ Magadi Road from Chord Road to Outer Ring Road■ Outer Ring Road from Mysore Junction to Central Silk Board Junction, ■ Central Silk Board Junction to Vellara Junction■ Bannerghatta Road from IIMB to Wilson Garden■ Vellara to White Field via Varthur and HAL * Agara Lake to Sirsi Circle via Lalbagh Fort Road■ City Centre to Kengeri via Sirsi Circle■ Yeshwanthpur Industrial Area to Hebbal (NH-4 to NH-7)■ Mekhri Circle to Hope Farm via Old Madras Road■ Cubbon Road to ORR via Kamaraj Road, Budha Vihar Road, Hennur Road
