Srinagar: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, who made an abortive bid to intrude into a CRPF camp along the banks of the Dal lake in Srinagar, were killed after a night-long encounter with security forces.

The militants were killed in an early morning assault launched by police and security forces, Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda told reporters.

According to documents recovered from the bodies, the militants are Pakistani nationals Abu Hashim and Abu Zahid. Two AK-56 rifles, eight magazines, four hand grenades, 52 rounds and a mobile phone ere also recovered from them. Three CRPF personnel received minor injuries in the attack

The militants had been heavily armed and had hurled grenades in an attempt to storm the CRPF camp at Hotel Boulevard on Thursday evening.

The jawans, however, reacted quickly and their counter-action forced the militants to take refuge in the parking lot, next to the security forces' camp.

DGP Khoda added that the police and the CRPF personnel cordonned off the area to minimise damage. Close quarter weapons were also employed.

The attacks took place at a time when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was hosting an iftar party at nearby Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).

However, security officials said the attack had no connection with the Chief Minister's party.

Militant violence in the Kashmir valley is on a rise with over 50 people getting killed in the past two weeks.

Khoda said that though infiltration from across the Line of Control was continuing by militant groups like Lashkar, Al Badr, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujaihideen, the security apparatus in the state was geared up to meet the challenge head on.
