New Delhi: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday faced sloganeering from a local BJP MLA as she visited Malwa in flood-hit Barmer district.
As Sonia interacted with the residents of Malwa village, a sudden burst of sloganeering from a man in the crowd, criticising the Centre over inadequate flood relief, left the local Congress leaders red-faced. It later turned out that the man was local BJP MLA Jalam Singh.
Sonia, who was accompanied by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the visit to Rajasthan's flood-affected areas, was inquiring with the local people about their problems in Malwa when the BJP MLA began raising slogans.
However, when Sonia reached Barmer, Barmer MP and BJP leader Manvendra Singh apologised to her in person, saying, "I apologise to you on his (the BJP MLA) behalf."
As the BJP MP was apologising to Sonia, local Congress leader and former MLA from the area Amin Khan protested against the incident, saying, "Ye nahin chalega (It can't go on like this)".
An altercation also ensued between Khan and the local MLA and Sonia sternly asked them to stop it.
"Mere samne bilkul nahin aur mere peeche bhi nahin (You can't do it before me and even after I have gone from here)," she said.
Sonia was accompanied by AICC General Secretary and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and PCC chief B D Kalla.
The desert district of Barmer has been worst affected by unprecedented rains with at least 104 people dead due to flash floods.
