Ship probe: Italian marines in 7-day custody
The Kerala High Court has asked the state and central government to respond to the FIR by the March 28.

New Delhi: A Kollam court on Thursday decided that the two Italian naval guards charged with murder of two Indian fishermen will stay on in police custody for another week.

Earlier on Thursday the visiting Italian deputy Foreign Minister Steffan de Mistura said in Kerala that he was satisfied with the steps taken by India.

On Wednesday, he had acknowledged the Kerala police's professional attitude during his meeting with minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur.

The marines had filed a plea to squash their FIR. The Kerala High Court has asked the state and central government to respond to it by the March 28.

Simultaneously, Italy also moved the Kerala High Court for quashing the murder charges against two of its marines in the killing of the fishermen off Kerala coast last Wednesday and asked the owners of the merchant vessel to deposit a Rs 25 lakh bank guarantee.

The ship will be arrested until the guarantee is furnished in the case filed by the wife of one of the dead fishermen seeking a Rs one crore compensation from its owners.
