Shillong: Three women and three children were on Saturday charred to death in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district when their house caught fire, police said. Among those who died is a 28 year old woman and three of her children, and the other two women are her sisters, they said.
According to the police, the incident took place at Umkynsier village at around 3 am on Saturday when their thatched house caught fire.
Police said the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, however, they suspected that the fire might have started from the kitchen.
District Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep along with his Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) in charge of the area rushed to the spot later in the day to complete all formalities including inquest and post mortem.
Police said there is no indication of foul play and said it is an unfortunate accident even as a full fledged investigation will be done.
