Hong Kong: An exciting year lies ahead for women's tennis with the return of Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. While the Williams sisters continue to remain as hungry as ever, a fit Maria Sharapova would be desperate to challenge the best in her quest for supremacy.
No one would want to make a fresh start more than Sharapova. Injuries had refused to leave her side almost throughout 2009 and though she made a comeback towards the end, the former world No. 1 still finished outside the top 10 for the first time since 2003.
"I am very fortunate to be back, you know, looking forward to good and healthy New Year. As things will turn out they will, and if they don't they won't, I am very proud of the things I have achieved in my career already," says Sharapova.
Venus Williams though was in action all through 2009. After making it to the finals of the Wimbledon, she ended the year ranked sixth in the world.
After the month-long off season break the five-time Wimbledon champion is all set for the year ahead.
On the women's tour we had a very nice off season so definitely give some time to... have some time-off and then enjoy the opportunity to come back and play tennis which we all love to do," says Venus.
The year 2010 will also be a year that sees the return of seven-time Grand Slam winner Justine Henin to the WTA circuit.
She has already been give a wildcard to the Australian Open and her competitors are kee to see her back in the fray.
"I think you know obviously she was a great champion before. I don't see why not she can keep on playing great tennis," says Venus.
The Australian Open kicks off on January 18 and with the return of two great Belgian stars to the circuit 2010 sure has a lot to look forward to.
