Believed to have emerged as part of the drag scene within the larger LGBTQ+ community, “gagged” was originally used by audience members to describe impressive and outrageous— and therefore, gag-worthy— drag performances. Fans and fellow drag queens began using the expression as the ultimate compliment: “Your performance was so good, it had me gagged!” The term quickly evolved in use across all kinds of fandoms, including Kpop and the Marvel universe. Some sources claim that “gagged” dates all the way back to gay ballroom dancing culture of the 1960s and 1970s. The ballroom dancing scene during that time period is also credited with introducing terms like “tea,” “slay,” and “shade” into the vernacular.
