THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Almost a week ago, police higher-ups had commented about the restructuring of the Shadow Police, formed to curb the increasing incidence of violence in the city. The novel idea was to recruit fresh hands from the AR Camp to the Shadow wing under the direct control of the district headquarters. But now, the move has apparently lost steam and, as a result, the functioning of the special wing has hit a deadlock. The manpower deficit in the local police stations has been cited as the reason for the situation and the City Police Commissioner has ordered Shadow Policemen to report to their concerned police stations. The plan to make fresh recruitments to the Shadow Police from AR Camp and local police stations is still remaining on paper and the working of the wing has literally come to halt. Sources in the Police Department said that so far no fresh recruitments have been made and the wing has certainly lost its verve. ”If a person continuously works in a wing, chances are high that he gets tainted. In the case of the Shadow Police too, it proved to be true. That’s why the decision to dissolve the current team was taken in haste. Though the wing will be revived after deploying new recruits from the AR Camp and a handful of men from city stations, the senior officers haven’t set a deadline for completion of the project,” a senior officer said, seeking anonymity. He also said that the Shadow wing was now dormant. But City Police Commissioner T J Jose took a strong exception to the allegation. ”Even at this moment, the Shadow Policemen are engaged in a particular assignment. Some of the men in the wing are not competent and they will be weeded out. How can we wind up such a wing at a time when its presence is needed the most?,”he asked.
