HYDERABAD: As Mark Twain puts it, “let the winds catch in the sails and explore” and keeping with the spirit, sailors from across the country will navigate the Hussain Sagar waters during the third Monsoon Regatta being organised by the Yacht Club of Hyderabad. The need to clean up the Hussain Sagar for tourism and sports was also emphasised during inauguration of the Monsoon Regatta. Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary (Tourism), Andhra Pradesh said, “We have planned a second sewage treatment plant of 30 MLD capacity apart from the existing 20 MLD plant. Five channels for effluent treatment have been diverted to prevent choking of the lake. In order to mark the 450th year of the Hussain Sagar next year, we are planning to build a floating hotel and sea-plane for tourists.”Participants gathered for a round of practice on Wednesday before commencement of the sailing races from July 8. An added feature this year is the Family Regatta, where three to five members form a team. “We want to promote it as a recreational activity to attract greater participation,” said the Suheim Sheikh, founder president of the Yacht Club. Commenting on the exclusive nature of sailing as a sport, Suheim Sheikh said the Yacht Club wanted to promote talent across classes.R Rajnikanth, a student from Mehdipatnam who coaches at the YCH, is participating in his third consecutive competition. “I manage to balance my studies and come for practice every weekend. I don’t have to pay any fee and enjoy the feeling of setting sail,” said the class IX student of Sardar Vallabhai Patel High School.
