Senior citizens meet

THIRUVANATHAPURAM:  An engaging day sprinkled with some magic, music, bits of chatter and a meaty discussion on ‘Food and Health’,  the monthly meeting of  senior citizens passed by gleefully at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan on Saturday.Jacob Antherper, a die hard fan of Mohammed Rafi, Shahul Hameed, who croons old melodies with an aged but blessed voice, Rema Unnithan, a retired teacher and writer, were a few among those who had turned up at the gathering organised by Unarvu, a cultural organisation for senior citizens“We see Unarvu as a meaningful cultural space for senior citizens who are facing lot of socio-economic and health problems in a world where the social situations are changing each moment. The organisation which began last year has been attracting so many  old people who have been leading a lonely life after retirement,’’said P S Rajasekharan, member secretary, Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan.                           ENSAll the members seemed keen on their health as frequent questions cropped up during the discussion on ‘Food and Health’ .The session was conducted by Dr Aneesh T S, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine, Medical College, here. After some serious health discussions it was time for some magic. The magician was K Somakumar,a retired superintendent engineer of PWD all smiles to cheer up the gathering with his simple tricks. ‘‘’I am not a professional magician but you can call me an amateur magician,’’ said Somakumar who fulfilled his childhood dream of learning magic by joining the course conducted at Magic Academy.‘’Along with cultural activities we also organise medical camps, talks on various topics but we are facing some problems due to lack of fund and as a next step we are planning to extend the activities conducted by unarvu to village areas also,’’ said  M Raveendran, convener, Unarvu.
