BANGALORE: One of the oldest schools in the city, the Government Urdu Higher Primary school located in Jogupalya is on the verge of collapse as the main building of the school is completely damaged. The building frame work held by a tin sheet roof has weakened considerably and the day is not far off when it may sag down like ninepins. The sad story is that this school with two teachers on board sees a good number of children studying albeit in precarious conditions. With the lack of basic amenities, the number of student intake has been falling in the last few years. With the school closed for summer vacations, the school has become a hub for illegal activities like gambling as well as a dump yard for garbage. Some people are also using this space as a urinal too.“There is no way to prevent miscreants from entering the school premises. While a few of them use the premises to sleep, others use it for gambling. At times, they quarrel and their shouting and yelling makes it tough for us to concentrate,” said Reshma, headmistress in charge.Miscreants also lay their hands on whatever available school property on premises. The police are yet to nab those who have stolen a LPG cylinder from the school, added Reshma. The tin sheet roof is rusted and the parents are now scared to send their wards to this school. “If you see the building from far, you will never realise that this is a school. The building is in such a bad condition and the BBMP is planning to shift the school and I hope this will be done soon before the next academic year begins,” said Suresh, a resident. This school has been adopted by Mohsin Shariff Educational and Charitable Trust and when City Express tried contacting the trust members to inquire about the horrible conditions prevailing in the school, there was no response from the trust. Speaking to City Express, Jogupalya corporator, K Gowtham Kumar said, “We are talking to the deputy director of Public Instructions, to shift the school to a new building. The trust ,which has adopted the school, has not approached us for any help. We will shift the school and we will clean the place and build a beautiful park.”
