SC to hear plea seeking postponement of J&K polls due to floods
The party has claimed that no polls should be held in the state till the time rehabilitation work is underway in the state.

Srinagar: Ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, the Supreme Court will hear a petition by J&K Awami National Conference seeking postponement of polls in the state in the backdrop of recent floods. The party has claimed that no polls should be held in the state till the time rehabilitation work is underway in the state.

The SC bench has said that the plea of Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference be placed before the court of Chief Justice of India on Friday itself. The bench of CJI is also hearing another matter related to the rehabilitation work and hence the case has also been sent before the court.

Answering a PIL in the SC seeking permission to distribute flood relief material in the state after the announcement of elections, the Election Commission has clarified that relief and rehabilitation work will go on despite the model code of conduct being in effect.

The EC has said that no prior permission is needed for relief operations.
