An IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh has filed a police complaint against a Samajwadi Party legislator for assault.

Lucknow: An IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh has filed a police complaint against a Samajwadi Party legislator who allegedly assaulted him because he refused to stay the transfer orders of a corrupt policeman.

Looking on, on Thursday, when ruling party MLA Ramvir Singh Yadav was beating District Superintendent of Police Amitabh Thakur in Ferozabad, 450 km from Lucknow, were the District Magistrate and several others.

"I have got a case registered against the MLA and his men for obstructing official work, rioting and for threatening to kill me," Thakur told IANS over the telephone from Ferozabad.

A flustered Thakur managed to save his life by escaping from the scene in his official vehicle.

The half-a-dozen policemen detailed for the MLA's personal security have been suspended for joining the legislator in targeting the police officer.

According to a report received at the state police headquarters in Lucknow, Yadav had been upset with Thakur because Thakur did not adhere to his demand that police inspector V K Trivedi not be transferred.

Trivedi was being shifted from the Jasrana police station following serious complaints of corruption and undue harassment of people, said a police officer.

On Thursday, Yadav reached Jasrana when Thakur and the district magistrate had gone there to review security arrangements for state Public Works Department Minister Shiv Pal Singh Yadav's proposed visit to the area.

When Thakur objected to the legislator's behaviour, his brother, driver and aides started abusing and assaulting him.

Finding himself cornered and outnumbered, the cop made his escape.

This is not the first incident when political leaders have attacked police and government functionaries in the state.

On July 23, Ram Singh Rana, a ruling party activist and self-styled student leader, misbehaved with Lucknow University Vice Chancellor R P Singh.

On July 20, Ram Naresh Yadav, the president of the district Samajwadi Party unit in Rae Bareli, assaulted the local district inspector of schools Gyan Prakash for not complying with his wishes.

And on July 10, Bantu Yadav, a former local corporator stormed the local electricity supply authority office, thrashed them and held them captive for five hours.

No action has yet been taken against any of the politicos.
