They have no CDs of their music to sell. But this band literally rules the music scene in the virtual world. Junkyard Groove, a city-based four-member musical band, which has a fan following of more than 30,000 on Facebook, recently added another feather to its cap. The group will perform in all the hotels that are a part of the Indian chain of Aloft as part of the celebrations organised by the group to mark the launch of its 50th hotel at Coimbatore recently.“We don’t play to small crowds like these,” lead vocalist and guitarist Ameeth Thomas said, referring to the small number of guests that had gathered at Aloft, OMR IT Expressway. “We have performed in roughly about 400 concerts all over the world. Our last concert at Delhi saw a gathering of about 4,000 fans,” Ameeth added. But even though only a sparse crowd had gathered to witness the musical evening, they went home satisfied having been thoroughly entertained by the lilting performance of the band. The story behind Junkyard Groove is what is called stuff made of legends. Passionate about music, Ameeth never thought he would chose music full-time, until a casual chat with a customer while working with an IT company turned things around. “We just got chatting about our likes and dislikes. The customer said he was a musician and asked me what I did. I said, ‘I’m a musician too’. He asked me then, ‘Why don’t you load your songs on Myspace’. And that’s how it all started,” said Ameeth. Having already recorded his first album, and on the verge of releasing his second, Ameeth said he was confident that the Internet was the ideal platform to showcase his music and songs. “The way Internet was booming, it was the right choice. Especially for independent music players, it was a blessing,” he reasoned. However, the band did have its ups and downs. After losing its initial members, Ameeth had to form a new band all over again. One of the current members, in fact, happens to be a fan. “I don’t know why we broke up. I heard about it on Facebook! But we are rocking all over again,” confirmed Ameeth. He is supported by Sajith (bassist), Naveen (lead guitarist) and Shanky (drummer). Despite these disappointments, for Ameeth, the high point in his life came when he performed in Dubai with the who’s who of the independent music scene. “We’ve performed with some of the biggest names in rock music in Dubai. That will remain my biggest satisfying moment,” he said.
