New Delhi: Rekha's on screen portrayal of a politician has been confined within the limits of being a mayor, a role she played in the film 'Dil Hai Tumhaara', but in real life she has escalated to the heights of being a Rajya Sabha member. She along with cricketer Sachin Tendulakar is all set to take oath of the Upper House's member.
Rekha's life may seem to very glossy today as she has reached to the zenith of art and politics but this has been a long journey for her.
It's not a small achievement for someone who started her professional life at a tender age of 13. Rekha always regretted not living a normal life. Personal or professional, she always stood up against the odds.
Controversy's favourite child Rekha didn't have any political learning at home. Though her father Gemini Ganesan was quite influential in Tamil Nadu politics, he always refrained himself from joining the active politics.
The decade of 1980 saw her rise to the superstardom. Hit after hit, she became the favourite of both commercial as well as parallel filmmakers.
At a time when heroines of her age were receiving lifetime achievement awards, Rekha was accepting awards for portraying the suave and glamorous Madam Maya in 'Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi'.
Even when Rekha got the Filmfare's lifetime achievement award, she was more in news for ageless beauty and trend setting wardrobe.
However, the things didn't remain the same for Rekha in the new millennium. The first half fetched her seven well publicized films, but the roles started drying up after 2005. Two small roles in 2006 (Krrish, Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana) and one almost forgotten character in 2007 (Yatra), Rekha must have been itching for work. Her last appearance in 'Sadiyaan' (2010) bombed too, and TV also remained reluctant in featuring her in prominent role, so, this RS nomination could prove to be a new lifeline for the beautiful actress.
However, her success as a RS member will depend on her efforts to contribute to the film fraternity. Several film personalities have been nominated before Rekha but most of them preferred being idle rather than forcing the government to change its policies towards the film world.
Rekha's personal life is a saga of struggles and wins and thus we can hope for something better from her.
Cinema lovers would definitely love to see the graceful lady making her presence felt among the stalwarts of politics. Her charm will be an added attraction for the otherwise serious policy makers too.
